Our Review
The first thing I do when I begin researching into a bit of background of a film is head off to see what the critics thought. Usually there are at least half of the reviews (unless it’s a critics designed movie which usually suck in reality) are pointing out just how bad the film was. But Erin Brockovich not only avoided such abuse but it also a pretty good film in real life.
The film has a political point to make. Or at least it seems to. The story centres around Erin going to work for a law firm where she finds a major corporation, PG&E buying people off after they have basically poisoned a bunch of people. She then goes on a mission to bring them down.
The film has a nice original story right? Well as it happens I saw a film called a Civil Action in which claimants group together when a lawyer on a mission attempts to bring two corporations down. It came out two years ago. Although I would say based on that, both films are based on a true story – make of that what you will.
It also has some classic drama elements; Erin is a single parent with three kids although some quality gritty romance is thrown in with a biker. It can in parts still be a legal drama dressed up though and some of the legal issues are dragged out a little for those not familiar with law (unlike some of us, not to brag ;).
Julia Roberts gives quite an impressive performance in that she fits the role. She has that down to earth realist person style providing you don’t question whether this situation would ever arise in real life. It’s nice to think of these types of stories but how often do they happen? Still I think it is more realistic than most.
So what is the end result for the movie? It’s good, I can’t say that it is my type of drama but as the drama genres go it is a dry film but still enjoyable if you like soaps, real life and so forth. Personally I hide away from real life. Make up your own mind.
