Our Review
As much as I am aware that this was a movie, it annoyed me that Elle got into Harvard – I want to go there! Although I guess I can’t really expect to get in, not having applied and all. More on that later though, what is legally blonde is the first question? Well it’s an attempt at a comedy. Quite a good attempt as it happens.
Surprisingly the film was quite positive feedback. Although to most teens its just another teen flick that they hate, outside this small bubble there are not that many people who would have bad things to say about the movie. Personally I won’t be raving about it though; it’s not particularly good more than it is bad.
Reese Witherspoon plays Elle Woods who spends her all time partying at Southern California University when hey boyfriend Warner breaks up with her to say he is moving away to attend Harvard so he can get some random government job. As I am sure anyone would, Elle decides to enrol at Harvard too to win him back.
The comedy has its funny moments which open the film although towards the end it gets a bit too serious for a comedy and just not effective enough to be a drama. Witherspoon gives a good performance though and Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions, the Sweetest Thing) makes a nice addition to the cast.
Not for my full moan about the film though – why does the great looking ultra popular star of the film have to have such a high or IQ or be deep down so smart – the same thing happened with Zack in She’s All That. They make them really smart and it’s just not like that in real life. Popular kids are no clever, clever kids are not popular. That is how the system works.
This leads the films plot down the road to crazyville. After all would she really get into Harvard? I don’t think so. How about passing with an amazingly high grade and being key note speaker at graduation? The only thing that made sense was when Callahan (Victor Garber, Alias) reveals he selected Elle to help him out because he wanted to hit on her.
Still if you have the ability to take all that with a pinch of salt (I can’t say I could despite my attempts) then Legally Blonde has some funny moments. I have seen a lot funnier though, and if it doesn’t jump out at you immediately, give it a miss.
