Our Review
Stumbling upon this film I originally thought I was going to be watching some kind of female sports drama. I never really figure out why. But what I was actually watching was a dark dusty and fairly entertaining flick.
Although at first look, a film about poker players doesn’t seem any more interesting than my initial view, I found myself quite hucked on the film. It had a sense of realism that really makes you believe Matt Damon is in this situation. Possibly down to the lack of spark and flare of the movie, offering a gritty realism.
For what it is though, I would not recommend it as something you would want to see at the cinema. To get the full effect buy the DVD and keep it buried for a winters night when the wind is blowing and the rain is coming down. The movie has plenty of atmosphere but lets face it, you can never have too much.
Despite its lack of flesh or storyline, the movie never really seems to drag on. It is little more than two hours of poker games but the great looking sets and entertaining acting keep you watching the movie for the length of the film.
Another addition to the realism is surprisingly the narration by Damon. Maybe it is just because I hear voices but it added yet more depth to the movie. Of course beneath it all there is the theme that Damon lost his law school fund playing cards, not the greatest role model that can be found on the big screen.
The movie almost has a sub language of ‘Rounders’ as the card players are known which producers some great quotes and an intriguing film. Rounders is a movie that doesn’t go anywhere, but nor does it need to.
